How to give feedback on a physics trial exam
The trial exam is a diagnostic, not a grade. Its whole value is what students do in the weeks after, so the feedback matters more than the mark, and it has to arrive while there is still time to act on it.
A class set of physics trial exams is one of the most valuable pieces of data you get all year, and one of the most punishing to mark. Every script is long, the marking scheme is unforgiving, and the students who most need the feedback are usually the ones you reach last, at the bottom of the pile, days after they have stopped thinking about it. This guide is about extracting the diagnostic value fast enough that it still changes what a student does before the real exam.
Mark against the scheme, per question, one question at a time
Physics marking lives or dies on consistency, and consistency comes from marking question 1 across every script before you touch question 2. You hold one part of the scheme in your head at a time, method and consequential marks get applied the same way to every student, and you see the whole class's approach to that question at once. Award working marks even where the final answer is wrong, because in physics the follow-through mark is often the difference between a student who has the method and one who doesn't, and that distinction is exactly what the feedback needs to capture.
Separate technique losses from knowledge gaps
This is the single most useful thing you can tell a physics student after a trial, and it is invisible unless you look for it. Marks are lost two very different ways:
- Knowledge and skill gaps — they cannot do projectile motion, they do not understand fields, the topic isn't secure.
- Technique losses — they can do the physics but bleed marks anyway: no working shown so no method marks, units dropped, significant-figure penalties, the "explain" question answered in one line, the multi-mark question that needed three distinct points given two, time run out so the last question is blank.
A student losing 15 marks to technique needs a completely different fortnight from a student losing 15 marks to not understanding the topic, and the raw score hides which one they are. In our experience technique losses are where the fastest ATAR/score gains hide, because they don't require re-learning anything, just a change in exam habit. Name which kind of loss each student is making. It is the difference between feedback that says "revise fields" and feedback that says "you understand fields; you are losing four marks a paper by not stating the direction and not showing the substitution, fix that and it's four marks back for free."
Feed back on the question types, not just the topics
Group the losses by what the question asked the student to do, not only by topic. Physics exams reward specific moves: define, derive, calculate-with-units, explain-with-a-principle, interpret-a-graph, evaluate-an-experiment. Most students have a question type they reliably underperform on across topics, and spotting it is worth more than another topic list. "You are strong on calculations but the extended-explanation questions cost you nine marks across the paper" is a sentence a student can act on tomorrow.
Make the next step a priority list, not a post-mortem
The student does not need every error catalogued; they need to know the two or three things that will move their score most, in order. Lead with the highest-value change (usually a technique fix or the single weakest topic), be concrete about what practising it looks like, and stop. A trial exam feedback sheet with fifteen action points converts to zero action; three ranked ones convert to a study plan.
Timing is the whole game. Trial exam feedback that lands two weeks out changes behaviour; the same feedback that lands after the last revision lesson is a report card. Whatever gets the diagnostic into students' hands faster is worth more than a more elaborate one that arrives late.
